Patient Information
What is Periodontal Disease?
Overview of Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease encompasses a range of conditions affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. The two main types are gingivitis (the mildest form) and periodontitis (a more severe form). Gingivitis is characterized by inflammation and bleeding of the gums, while periodontitis involves deeper tissue damage and can lead to tooth loss.
Causes
The primary cause of periodontal disease is the buildup of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth. Poor oral hygiene practices, such as inadequate brushing and flossing, allow plaque to harden into tartar, which can irritate the gums and lead to inflammation. Other contributing factors include:
-
Smoking or tobacco use
-
Hormonal changes (e.g., pregnancy, menopause)
-
Genetics
-
Certain medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, autoimmune diseases)
-
Medications that cause dry mouth or gum changes
Symptoms
Symptoms of periodontal disease can vary depending on the severity of the condition but may include:
-
Swollen or puffy gums
-
Bleeding gums during brushing or flossing
-
Persistent bad breath
-
Loose teeth or changes in bite
-
Gum recession, making teeth appear longer
-
Pus between teeth and gums
Health Implications
If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to significant complications, including tooth loss and damage to the bone that supports the teeth. Additionally, there is evidence linking periodontal disease to other health issues, such as heart disease, respiratory disease, and complications in diabetes management.
Preventing periodontal disease involves maintaining good oral hygiene practices, including:
- Brushing teeth at least twice a day
- Flossing daily
- Regular dental checkups and cleanings
Treatment options vary based on the severity of the disease and may include professional dental cleanings, scaling and root planing, medications, and in advanced cases, surgical procedures to restore supportive tissues. By understanding periodontal disease and its implications, individuals can take proactive steps to maintain their oral health and prevent serious complications.
